Yep, the day has finally arrived.  Levi had been carrying a day-glo orange duct tape wallet for a while.  I think he and his cousins made it last summer.  But it was weighed, measured, and found lacking.

No place to hold his driver’s permit!

Kim took him to the DMV Saturday for his test.  After waiting in line for about an hour (seriously? on a day with a home PSU game?) Levi strolled to the computer screen to face the 18 question exam with a rugged determinism.  He was slightly disappointed when the quiz ended after he answered the first 15 questions correctly–he wanted to go 18 for 18!

Now we begin the 50 hours of in-car driver training required for him to take his test for his official license.  Did you know that State College Area High School was the first in the country to offer Driver’s Ed?  True story.  1932.  Kind of a big deal.

I’m looking on this as an adventure, a chance for me to bond with Levi on the open road, behind the wheel of the truck.  I know that I’ve grown in patience, and Levi is turning out to be a very responsible and capable young man.  This step in the adventure should put both of us to the test!

I remember my own in-car driver’s ed, back in Warner Robins, GA.  Mr. Rewis was my teacher, and I had to take the class in the evenings after baseball.  He liked to ask us trick questions as we drove, like, “Which hand do you hold your ice cream cone in while you drive–right or left?”  Ironically, I’m pretty sure that I caught him nodding off one Saturday afternoon while I drove us around the countryside.

How about you?  Got any good “learning to drive” stories?

I took Driver’s Ed in Bellevue, Nebraska. The videos they showed of accident scenes – including the bodies – are seared into my brain, and still affect the way I drive today. Also remember that our “big” learning day was driving to the mall in Omaha – on the interstate! Change Omaha to Orlando and that is how I spend most of my driving time as an adult….

Congrats Levi!!! I got kicked out of Drivers Ed. They said I stole the sign. It wasn’t me. It was Mindy Maxwell.

And PS There is a red beetle for sale down the way.
