For my kids, this is maybe the best week of the summer. Cousins show up to sleep on the floor (or stay up way too late–sorry Aunt Jodi!) and spend a week at Sports Camp! It’s our church’s alternative to the legendary Vacation Bible School.
Now if your church still does VBS, that’s all well and good. Jon Acuff has written many a wonderfully witty post about VBS, most recently last week. And VBS will certainly have its spot in the Hall of Fame someday.
But our sports camp kicks the booty of VBS. I love it for so many reasons! It fits the culture of our town, kids love the instruction that they’re getting in their sports, and the songs that go along with this camp are connecting with our kids.
Last week our fantabulous sports camp leader people were turning away volunteers–that’s how many adults want to be part of this thing! There were only 80-ish campers signed up, but the leaders believed that they would have 150. In less than a week more than 70 additional young’ns signed up to join the festivities.
But do you know what the kicker is for me? How many dads do you think typically volunteer for VBS? Not too many, I promise. But when we start talking about sports camp, every dad wants to be involved. It’s the kind of thing that dads do–we all think we know more than the big time coaches anyway. Having the opportunity to rub shoulders with dads and talk about the really important things in life is priceless.
Kudos to you, sports camp peeps. You kick booty!
