Yep, it’s true.  And the best part is YOU get to move with us.

Starting June 17, Calvary Midtown is moving downtown to the State Theatre.

Details first:

  • Beginning June 17 Midtown is moving to the State Theatre (130 West College Ave, near the corner of College & Fraser, click here for a map).
  • Parking is free in the garages/on-street on Sundays (except for special events & home football game weekends)
  • kidZ conneXion will use rooms in the State Theatre and the nearby Central PA Dance Workshop (101 South Fraser).  Kim Sublett will have more details for families this Sunday.
  • Our worship gathering will start at 11:00 and end around 12:30.
  • We will still have coffee (that was a non-negotiable for Dan!)
  • We are at the High School South Building this weekend, 6/10/12

So, to recap: this week (6/10) we’re at the High School South building, next week (6/17) we’re at the State Theatre.

Here’s a little more of the back-story:
We have been renting space from the school district for several years, and have enjoyed a good relationship with SCASD.  The district is using this summer to make repairs/improvements on the building–repaving the parking lot, asbestos removal from a hallway, and roof repairs to the auditorium–that would make it difficult to continue to use the South Building.

We looked into renting the State Theatre years ago, but couldn’t work out an arrangement.  Our friend Rich Biever recently became the director of the State, and the possibility of renting that space popped back up on our radar.  If any building in State College aligns with the vison and mission of midtown, it’s the State Theatre!  The only hitch is that our good friends New Hope Church had just begun to use the upstairs space at the State.  We would never want to do anything that negatively affects our friends in the city-church.  So we met with Pastor Ben Frank, spent a lot of time in prayer and discussion, and found this win-win resolution!

At least for the summer, New Hope is going to join us for worship at the State.  We are closely aligned in purpose and principles, and we’ve been working together for years anyway.

I am excited about this move, and looking forward to a new partnership with Rich Biever, his staff, and the State.  I love the idea of being downtown, right across from campus.  There will be some adjustments, some glitches, some “Hmm, we didn’t see that coming” moments, to be sure.  But we’re doing our best to make this transition smooth.  We’re working hard to iron out all the details and prepare for every scenario.

Kim (my lovely wife, and director of our children’s ministry) will be meeting with parents this weekend following our worship gathering to discuss the details.  You can email her (kasublett at gmail dot com) with any questions you might have.

With this move, there will be a number of opportunities to get involved.  If you have been thinking about getting more connected to midtown, now is the time!  We’ll train you, walk with you, encourage and empower you, etc.  Here are some of the people you might want to contact:
