For the first time since 1989, today I went to work as something other than “The Youth Pastor.”  My role over the past 20 years has always been multi-faceted–I’ve been the preacher, the worship leader, the counselor, the Sunday School superintendent, and the ever-popular “and any other duties assigned by the senior pastor.”  But I’ve always had at the heart of it all the title youth pastor.

Tuesday is the official “morning of meetings” at Calvary.  It begins with the pastors of each gathering and the children’s ministry director meeting to talk and pray about vision, direction, details, etc for the weekend gatherings.  Following that, the entire staff gathers to share God-stories, pray together, and do a little equipping.  Today we spent the morning at the church building, taking down the Christmas decorations and prepping the place for the upcoming Leadership Advance, which is one of the best leadership development tools that I’ve ever seen.  It’s always fun being with Calvary’s staff.  We love to laugh and play together, and God continues to bless us by sending great people to be part of the team.

Kim and I spent some time thinking and talking with the kids over dinner tonight, dreaming out loud about the next few years.  We’re facing a lot of changes, and some of them are pretty significant.  Kim and I leave for China January 14th to go get Annabelle.  My job is changing.  Kim’s role at Calvary is changing.  Our kids are growing up…

We don’t know what the future holds.  We’re at a place in our lives where we’re seeing most of the dreams and visions we’ve been praying about come to happen.  (I’m working on a post for tomorrow that will dive into that topic a little more in depth.)  But while we’re at this turning of the page, starting a new chapter in life” stage, we are more confidant, more joyful, more grateful, and more excited than we’ve ever been to be part of what God is doing in Happy Valley.

How about you?  What’s your attitude like as you start this new year?
