Every parent should volunteer at the schools their children attend. Not only is it fun, but it’s educational! Each time I get to chaperone a field trip, haul a stage set around, or direct one of the field day activities I consider it a win. I get to hang out with other parents, see lots of kiddos from the neighborhood, and serve the school. I always come away thankful for the faculty and staff of our schools, and I learn new and exciting things about the people who live in our town.
Like this guy. Who knew that folks like him lived in places like this? His wife and I ran the “Fling-It Nets” station this morning for field day. I had a blast getting to hear their family story. And who knew that Fling-It Nets were so hard and yet so fun?
Of course, being one of the guys who has used games as teaching tools and group building exercises has pretty much made it impossible for a game to be “just a game.” I was watching each group work through their dynamics and dysfunctions all day. Even at 9 and 10 years old, the jocks think they can do everything by themselves, the class clown derails the group and thinks he’s hilarious, and the girls seem to be able to work together to accomplish the task. Hmmm…some things never change.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of my kids’ day-to-day. I’m also thankful that my job is flexible enough to allow me to jump into field day. And I’m pretty sure that the moms and dads who volunteered today could have set the record for # of catches in Fling-It. But we wouldn’t want to show our kids up, now would we?
