I know…hard to believe.  What started with a random email asking us to pray for a pregnant teenaged girl has turned into one of the best things in our life.  We anticipated having a big family, but we were fairly certain that our baby days were far behind us.  Once we adopted Annabelle at age 9 we got rid of all our baby toys, clothes, and dreams.

And then came Charlie.

He’s a blond-haired, blue-eyed, jabber jaw.  He’s a chunky little monkey who has only started to shed weight as he’s getting more mobile.  His vocabulary seems to grow each day, or we’re getting better at understanding his squeaks and squawks.  Kim’s got him making animal noises on cue.  Stairs are his latest conquest.  I have to admit–I’m enjoying watching him grow, play with the toys for 3 month olds and try new things, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t get a little worried watching him crawl around.  This world is a dangerous place.

Our lawyer told us to guard our hearts, even not to expect the adoption to actually take place.  I think we need to have a conversation with our lawyer!

I’ve said it before, but I think one of the biggest unlooked for blessings in the whole story is seeing how Annabelle, Josie, and Isaac have reacted to Charlie.  It’s been incredibly redemptive for them.  Their stories all tell the tale of abandonment.  The babies they knew were placed in an orphanage because…well, because the families couldn’t or wouldn’t keep the babies.  They’d never experienced a family who actually wanted a baby, who prayed and desired and worked to bring a baby home.

Annabelle actually voiced her hesitation (which is HUGE for her!)  She wasn’t sure that she would like a baby.  She’d had to take care of babies in her orphanage, changing diapers and being the childcare provider at an early age.

It didn’t take very long before she joined the line of Team Sublett trying to get their hands on that chubby-bubby!  She went so far as to tell Kim that she loved Charlie so much she wished she could be Charlie’s mom!

I know that adoption isn’t for everyone.  But there are many other ways to get involved in caring for orphans.  If you’d like to talk about any facet of adoption, we’d love to talk your ear off!

Thank you, Jesus, for Charlie!
