Some women are destined for diamonds, perfume, and flowers; my lovely wife has chosen a different road.  Oh, there are gems and fragrances and flowers, to be sure.  But not the type you’d buy in a shop downtown.

Kim had a definite gift in mind for Mother’s Day.  If we had missed it she would have been disappointed. But we didn’t; and she wasn’t.

I had a load of mulch delivered earlier in the week, which accounts for some of the fragrance.  After a full day of church and Josie’s last home rugby game/match/contest, we scooted home for a quick lunch before allowing Kim to “open” her gift.  She wanted us to spend the day together working in the yard.  So for the next few hours Annabelle weeded, Isaac mulched, Josie pruned, Lilly hacked, Sadie snipped, Levi rototilled, Kim planted, and I mowed. The bunnies got their cage cleaned. The dog got a trim and a bath. Charlie got soaked and dog-haired and played in the bunnies’ porta-pen and followed Sonny (the cat) through the neighbor’s bushes on all fours, just like a cat would.

When the sun went down we were all scratched and poked and a little sore. And satisfied. And mom was pretty happy with her gift…gems, and fragrances, and flowers.

And the truth is that we are the real winners in this scenario.  Because our lives are all the more rich, all better because of Kim’s influence and touch.  She is our chief memory-maker, the fun-bringer, the voice of reason and hope.  She is our prayer partner, our keeper-of-the-calendar, our dream chaser, our game-master.  She’s the mom that our kids need, and her influence in shaping their hearts forever.  So we win, really.IMG_1072 IMG_1252
