Our church is in the middle of our yearly Leadership Advance, and my role in the process is greatly diminished this year.  We weren’t sure when we’d be traveling, so I scheduled myself out of several things to make sure I didn’t have to cancel on anyone.  Tonight was a great night of worship (LOVE worshiping with Kim D and Stephanie Peters!) and teaching.  Dr. Barbara Farmer spoke first, and as usual, was entertaining and thought-provoking.

I was taking notes, and at one point she remarked that some of the people in the room were born leaders, simply better at taking risks than others.  She then challenged each one of us to step up and live like a leader.  I realize that not everyone is wired the same way, but I wonder what we can do to create an environment in which people can grow into leadership.  I was thinking specifically about my kids, but see if this list resonates with you.

I want to create an atmosphere for my kids that results in the following:

  • confident/secure in identity
  • a willingness to risk
  • knowing that they are loved unconditionally
  • no fear of failing
  • valuing the try
  • curiosity–asking questions
  • a “can do” attitude
  • a vision for a preferred future
  • a heart bent toward serving others
  • a sense of a call from God

I don’t think I’m through with the list, but that’s what I have for tonight.  What would you add to it?
