(yes, I know that some of you are singing along)

I was going to start this post with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” but I thought that might be a little melodramatic and over the top.  Plus it’s already been used, and I don’t want to cause you to lose focus trying to remember your 9th grade English Lit teacher.  Team Sublett has experienced some highs and lows over the past few days.  Let me give you the recap…

Levi and Lilly saw the fruit of their efforts this weekend as “Into the Woods” ran at State High.  Levi had a pretty big role (Jack) while Lilly made her high school debut behind the scenes as the Assistant Stage Manager.  They had 4 shows in 3 days, including a matinee Saturday featuring Act 1, which is a little more kid-friendly, since people die in Act 2.  State High doesn’t usually do a musical in the fall, but they thought they’d give it a shot this year. The show was fabulous, like most of the music/theatre pieces State High produces.  From set to show, the students and adults who gave so much of themselves deserve a rousing celebration and a totally appropriate side-hug.  I was proud of my kiddos.

The flip-side of that coin flopped for Isaac tonight.  He tried out for the 7th grade basketball team, along with about 25 other boys.  Isaac likes basketball; he plays outside in the driveway often.  He loved playing in the YMCA league last winter.  We weren’t sure what his chances were, and he really had no idea how his tryout was going when we asked Friday evening (it was a 2-day tryout.)  I picked him up this afternoon–the list was posted at the end of today’s tryout.  His face told me before any words could sneak out.  As he battled the tears all I could do was put my arm around his shoulders and walk him out to the truck.  Not enough vocabulary to cover the emotions that were running around in his heart, the questions in his mind.

We had a good family supper, played a game of Ticket to Ride, and watched a little football tonight.  By the time he was headed to bed, he was able to joke a little about not making the cut.  He said that the coach told the guys that it wasn’t the end of the world if they didn’t make the team; they could grow another foot between now and next year and maybe make the team.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him that a kid with 3 feet isn’t going to make a basketball team…maybe I’ll break the news tomorrow at breakfast.
