I got to speak to Calvary’s college student group last night (Elements) as they wrap up their study of Genesis. I got to close things with a look at the life of Joseph (chs 37-39, 41-50) and the ultimate rollercoaster ride that was his real life experience. I’ll be honest–I don’t know if I would have handled…no, I know I wouldn’t have handled the highs and lows as well as Joey did. He had such a grasp of the story he was in, of the calling and promises of God in the face of some daunting obstacles.
Any way, I loved the guided dialogue I had with those students last night. I basically told the story, wove in a few observations, had them retell the story to each other, then led them through some observational questions to see what they would glean from the story. They are some sharp young people!
As we broke into smaller groups for deeper discussion and prayer, Connor brought up the song Everlasting God. The verse echoes the words of Isaiah 40:28-31, reminding us of the promise that those who wait upon the Lord will find their strength renewed. He said that even though he knows it’s true (God doesn’t lie and crap like that) it sure feels like sometimes the junk we go through presses down hard and strength is a fast-fading commodity.
Brotha, I know how you feel.
So I ask you, blogosphere, where do you find your strength? Who pours into you? Who encourages you? Who is the wind beneath your wings?
For me, I got encouraged today by the leadership of Elements, who gave me a good bit more than the “Hey man, good job of speaking last night.” The words they gave me concrete and specific and buoyant. Much appreciated, words that will sit with me.
I’m also digging a new release from Will Reagan & United Pursuit. My friend Ginger brought them to my attention, and I bought the new release today. I’ve been listening all evening, allowing the promises and prayers to soak into my body and spirit. I think I might have to buy the “Live at the Banks House” project too. I can imagine what it must be like to worship/pray with those folks. Real, raw, hungry for the Presence of Jesus…I know a couple of the songs, but I’m enjoying everything that I’m hearing from them. Check out their beautiful website, and their even better community of Jesus followers. The new project is on iTunes.
I also get encouraged and challenged in a good way by my family. Sure, there are moments of tension and junk like most families, but at the end of the day I have to stop and give thanks for my fam. We’re not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but we love each other, and love Jesus, and God is at work in us.
