Sadie and Isaac got their first taste of Middle School drama over the past weekend. And unlike the Mean Girls scenario that you’ve got playing on a loop in your brain, this was the bestest kind of drama. Surrounded by a stellar cast, directed by a wonderful encourager of budding talent, helped along the way by countless adults and high school students pitching in…Barnum was a smashing success.
Oh, it wasn’t without incident. Opening night had it’s oopsies. But the cast and crew kept right on smiling and singing like they were old hands at overcoming the unexpected.
My lovely wife got to help put together the green room. I’m stil not sure where that phrase originated. Neither is the ultimate resource. For the middle school, this is sort of an after-party, usually opening night of the show. It’s themed like the show, and parents make a big fuss over their young thespians.
I have to tell you how redemptive this show was for Isaac. He fancies himself a hoopster, but did not make the cut for the 7th grade basketball team. That was a blow. But the very next day he got drafted into the cast of Barnum, and it was amazing to see his spirit soar. He lit up the stage with a grin that needed no spotlight.
We’re so grateful for the people God puts in our life, the folks who rally around our kids, who get what it means to be in their situation and respond with love. I don’t want to pamper my kids; but when someone goes above and beyond to make them feel included and wanted…sheesh…that moves my heart.
