I didn’t notice it at first, but as I made my way through the house tonight, something is most definitely different.
I made the obligatory “turn-off-the-lights” run before turning in, and on my return trip something caught my attention:
*My nose detected the taco-seasoned chicken from supper in the kitchen.
*I stopped in to peek at Charlie sleeping in his crib and the gentle fragrance of baby powder welcomes me.
*Shutting the laundry room door I caught the clean scent of the whirring washer.
None of this is supposed to be happening. My nose doesn’t work, at least not like yours does. It serves pretty well as an entry-point for air, and my sunglasses wouldn’t stay up without it, but as a smeller of smells my nose is the pits. Some scents register with me, but I can’t remember the last time I could smell every smell.
They say (and just who are “they” anyway?) that our sense of smell is strongly linked to memory. I don’t have very many memories from my childhood, and I’m wondering if it’s because I couldn’t smell things very well.
I have no idea why things are popping onto my olfactory radar tonight, and I’m wondering how long this will last. I’ll let you know if I can sniff my way through the day.
