Yeah, it’s a little bit wacky.  My role at Calvary has recently been re-re-vamped. I’ve gone from being the youth pastor to leading one of Calvary’s worship gatherings, and now back to youth ministry.  Honestly, I have been the chief instigator in the whole deal.  I heard from God about my call and my role and took that to the leadership, who responded by challenging me to go hard after it.  They made it possible for me to shift roles within Calvary–partly because this shift fits a need at Calvary, and partly because that’s how we try to operate here, allowing people to work in their strengths and run after their passions.

But the goofy part is that now that I’m the youth pastor I get to preach for a few weeks here in the summer.  That’s kind of ironic, since most of the past 3 and a half years I’ve been the pastor of midtown and have only preached about a dozen times or so each year.  Don’t hear what I’m not saying–I like preaching, and people don’t bolt for the door when they hear I’m speaking.  It’s just a little weird the way the timing has worked out.

For most of the year we (midtown) have Pastor Dan either live or on recorded on dvd. He preaches about 30-35 times a year, which is fabulous, because he is flat out one of the best communicators I’ve ever heard.  I’d rather have Dan preaching than most anyone.  I’ve been part of his staff for 15 years, so I know all of his stories and illustrations.  I’ve been tempted to tell some of them as my own!  And I still love to hear him tell them.

At any rate, I spoke last week, continuing the Undaunted Faith (Joshua) series.  I have been loving this series.  Each summer the Nold family disappears for a few weeks.  While Dan is gone, I’ll be preaching a little bit.  If for some strange reason you wanted to hear the sermon, it’s here.

I enjoy preaching–any time I get to speak about the Good News of Jesus, that’s a win for me.  But for me, the cool thing is that as part of the leadership at Calvary I get to spread my wings, try new things–and some old things.
