Every Thursday night I pick up Levi from his shift at the Chick-Fil-A (man, that would be like my high school dream job!)  While I’m not always wild about driving across town at 11pm, I’ve come to love the opportunity to talk with Levi, to learn what he’s learning, and to help him interpret the leadership and character lessons that he’s gathering.

Tonight he reminded me of a couple of things that I needed to hear.

1.  As a leader, I must talk to the person I have a gripe with, not talk about that person with my friends.  I don’t always do that.  Sometimes I justify it in my mind–I’m talking to another leader about leadership stuff, etc.  But it’s really just gossip, and I want to be better than that.

2.  When I’m offended by someone, it’s my responsibility to talk to the person I have a gripe with.  Similarly, when I know I’ve offended someone, I have to go to that person.  The goal in all of our broken relationships is reconciliation.  The person with the knowledge of the offense is supposed to go talk to the other person to get things worked out.  That’s biblical.  And it should be common sense.

3.  People need to hear what they’re doing well, and not just when they need to be corrected.  You know, the “3 positives, 1 negative” talk…I need to get better at catching people doing a good job, and pointing it out.

Levi is learning, and so am I.  And he makes a good cow.
