Yesterday my wife carted away more than half of our family. She had kids in every legal space in my truck, and the truck bed looked like the Beverly Hillbillies were alive and well. They plan to be gone for a week.
I’m not sure I can last that long.
It’s not like I’m totally alone. Levi and Lilly are here, and Kim came home with Charlie after depositing the rest of the bunch down in Bedford. They’re hanging with cousins for the week, hitting a VBS and crushing the games in the Friendship Village Campground game room. They’re having the time of their lives.
We’re actually glad that they aren’t overly-dependent on us. We like the fact that they’re able to go have fun with other friends and family. In fact, we’ve had to train Sadie to show us a little love. This was an actual phone conversation:
“Hey baby girl, do you miss us?”
“Um, no, not really.”
Knowing where Annabelle, Josie, and Isaac have come from, their comfort level is pretty impressive. They’re well-adjusted, trusting, and secure. So they have no fear about staying away from home, hanging with extended fam. And Sadie just goes with the flow.
We called them tonight to check in. They were all engrossed in life down at the camp, and no one’s pining to come home. That’s exactly what we expected. And I miss them like crazy.
