sometimes you have to do some deconstruction. In order to create the dream you see in your heart/head, you might have to rip out the existing version of reality.
Case in point: Calvary recently rented a storefront on the corner of Fraser & Calder Way. We have been trying to establish some form of presence downtown for years. God opened some pretty remarkable doors in the last 6 months, and now we’re meeting at the State Theatre for 2 Sunday morning worship gatherings and looking forward to having a 24/7 place for folks to connect in.
Any way you slice it, that’s pretty remarkable.
But before we can put of the coffee and crank up the wifi there’s a lot of work to be done. It’s actually taking longer than I anticipated (doesn’t it always?) to turn things around there. But once we got the plans approved by all the proper authorities, it was time for the dust to start flying.
A crew of us (including Levi and Isaac!) spent most of a Friday ripping and tearing and busting up the place. I was amazed at how much work we got done.
It was dirty, dusty, manual labor. Blisters formed on hands not familiar with hammer handles. We had to wear masks to try to keep the dust out of our lungs. By the end of the day we’d more than filled a big dumpster with the unwanted drywall and flooring.
Sometimes you have to make a mess before you can start to build what you have your heart set on. It will probably take longer, involve more people, cost more money, and give you a blister/sore back.
But if you want to get to the finished product, you’ve got to start with tearing out the things that are standing in the way of your dream.
Thanks to all the guys who showed up to work. Stop by the new CommonPlace (when we open!) and I’ll buy you a coffee. Thanks to Caleb Selders for the snazzy panorama pics.
