Last week was Valentine’s Day, or St. Valentines’ Day, or some occurrence fabricated by Russell Stover and Harry Hallmark (I don’t know his real first name) to make dudes buy gifts for their lady-friends.  I don’t have a problem with the gift-giving, but being “forced” to shell out the dough because a date on the calendar doesn’t seem genuine.

That being said, I presented Kim with a token of my affection amid the hustle of trying to get out the door Friday.  She once wore a heart-shaped pendant with birthstones representing Levi, Josie, Lilly, Annabelle, and Sadie.  With the addition of Isaac and Charlie to the family heart, there was no room to add to the stones.  So I snagged the old heart from her jewelry box, bought a new heart & stones, and had the wonderful folks at Miska Jewelers fashion the new pendant in time for V-Day.

I was trying to pull this off on the sly, thinking that I could surprise her with a little thoughtfulness.  You can imagine my gut feeling when I saw her rummaging around in her jewelry Thursday evening.  Sure enough, she asked, “Have you seen my heart pendant? I can’t find it.”

I replied, “You’re not going to find it in there, so you might as well stop looking.”  In addition to being a delightful person, she’s pretty amazing at busting up my surprise efforts.

Even with the element of surprise taken off the table, Kim loved the heart.  She says she probably won’t ever take it off…

Just to illustrate how closely aligned our hearts and heads are, here are 2 pictures we took.  I took the first in the morning when I let the dog out.  She shot the second later in the day as Sadie was snagging an icicle to eat.  (Yes, that’s how we feed all these kids…)

I think we’ve got a shot at lasting love, don’t you?
