Some of my favorite moments of each day are the last ones–bedtime for the kiddos. With lots of children in the house, there were years of on-going tales, special songs, nightly rituals, and some of the best snuggling on the planet.  Now that Charlie is flying solo in the tuck-in-able category, he gets the full attention of those who like to do the tucking-in. As the patriarch, I claim that right as often as possible.

Charlie and I have our routine.  Jammies on.  Teeth brushed.  I carry him to his bedroom where I set him down so he can turn on his Mater nightlight.  Then he shuts his door, I grab his blankie and puppy and scoop him up so he can turn off the bedroom light.  (He likes to turn off lights–no other Sublett children do that, just sayin.)  Then we sit in the rocking chair and I sing a couple of songs and pray with him.

Lately he’s been asking for the Bible song, which is how he refers to Jesus Loves Me.  I’m trying to teach him the words, allowing him to finish the phrase at places where I think he might be catching on.  You know, kind of like:
Jesus love me, this I ______
for the ______ tells me ______.

As of right now, the only word that he’s nailing Bible.  I’m pretty sure that he’s bluffing his way through the rest of the song, uttering grunts and cute little sounds to make his mom and siblings think that he’s really getting it.  But I’m on to his game.

Of course, he takes a different approach with me.  He’s heard me sing the phrase Yes, Jesus loves me so often that it must be stuck in his mind.  When we get to that part of the song I always pause to see how he’ll fill in the blank.  Without fail, Charlie’s response is always
Yes, Jesus loves __DA-DA!__

He’s either a literalist, or he’s buttering me up for some big ask down the road.  Either way, it’s pretty stinkin cute.
