No, not beef-day, although that would be awesomeness in itself.
Yesterday was an EPIC day of birthdays. Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were both born (in Tolkein’s mind) on September 22. Of course, the Shire calendar and the Gregorian calendar aren’t the same, but that’s no matter to me. It also turns out to be the birthday of one Levi Sublett! Levi turned 18 yesterday, and there was much rejoicing.
Levi is growing into quite the leader. He’s hilariously witty, has some great skills for the theatre, and is developing into a fine worship leader, and I’m seeing some definite signs of spiritual growth in him. He’s the kind of young man I want around me, even when we’re not really doing anything. He’s got more natural ability than I do when it comes to music, that’s for sure. But the thing that I think I admire the most about Levi is his ability to engage younger children, to make them feel special and important and wanted and loved.
He drives me crazy with his obsessing over comic books. His room looks like a tornado blew a herd of rhinos strapped with TNT through it. He’s bright and winsome and articulate and a good friend. He’s a giver and an includer and loves the underdog.
He’s a lot like me, which means that we’re either laughing so hard our guts hurt (cause we actually are that funny) or we’re bangin’ heads with each other (cause we’re both sure that we’re right–all the time!) Either way, I’d rather tussle with him than anyone else in the world.
He is our first-born, which means that he got us at our worst. We made a lot of mistakes along the way, and yet he’s turning out to be pretty ok. No doubt about it, I’m blessed to be his dad.
