Wow. I totally didn’t see that coming.
The Centre Daily Times carried a story today stating that 34 local bars have agreed to not sell alcohol on State Patty’s Day. Each bar will receive a $5000 subsidy, with the monies coming from the fees generated from the parking for the weekend.
I don’t know if the $5000 matches the income that the bars will lose by not selling alcohol this Saturday. Maybe it does…but either way, it’s a bold move by the local bar owners. I believe that it makes a strong statement about who we are, and who we want to be.
I’m proud of the students and shop-owners who are joining together to choose a different direction, a different destiny for our community. This might be the tipping point, the start of something new.
Many of us will be downtown at various points Saturday, walking around and praying, being a prayerful, peaceful presence. If you’re interested in joining us, drop me a line to let me know.
