Another banner day at Men’s Fraternity today. Despite the fact that they insist on starting at 6:15–in the morning!–I am always glad that I drag my bed-head out the door to go. Today’s lesson was not new information. It might be that I need a regular reminder of what matters, and who I’m supposed to be, and how God has wired us guys.
I don’t know where I first heard this, or how many times I’ve run into this info, but I needed to be reminded of the fact that I need other men in my life to help me grow and develop into the man God has called me to be. Here’s the thumbnail sketch:
We/I need other guys in my life. More specifically, I need men to fill 3 roles:
1. I need a mentor to encourage and challenge me, to call me to rise up.
2. I need peers to walk with me.
3. I need a protege, someone to mentor and pass on the wisdom I’ve gained.
I’ve heard my friend Jonathan Weibel talk about it (years ago at the Barn!) in the context of the Apostle Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy. Jonathan’s good like that, all Biblical and such.
I think I do a pretty good job of 2 & 3, but I definitely need to find a mentor-type guy to speak into my life. Andy Mylin is one of my best friends; he knows all my junk, all my struggles, and he loves me anyway. Penn State/Calvary is real fertile ground for young men who want to be mentored, so I never lack younger men to invest in.
I have been thinking and praying about how all of this fits together, what my role and response is to this info. It’s one of the main themes that keep rolling back around in my life, so it must be something that the Lord wants me to do something with…
Do you have a mentor? Are you investing in others? What insight do you have about that?
