I had the opportunity to spend a few hours with some of the super-sharp young men who are spending most of their time crushing it as part of Calvary’s Ministry Apprentice Program (MAP).  These guys are serving in various ministries around Calvary, some of them with me at midtown, others at other gatherings.  The MAP is a year-long program that’s designed to help folks figure out what God is calling them to do with their lives.  We’ve been doing this type of training for years, but I think we’re hitting our stride and dialing in on an effective tool.

One of the tweaks to this year’s “curriculum” is a regularly scheduled 3-hour block spent with some of the folks who are on staff at Calvary.  We have a list of topics that we can talk  about, and there’s always the “wild card” of “So what questions do you guys have?”

I had planned to talk about character qualities that I think will serve them, but we never got there.  We spent most of the time talking about how we can lead from the second chair–that is, how do I lead if I’m not the main guy, the lead pastor.  I found a great article from The Resurgence that I was going to walk them through, and the guys had some great thoughts to add to the discussion.

I love the fact that Calvary is making an investment in the next generation of leaders, and I can’t wait to see what God does through these young men in the days to come.  One of the most valuable pieces of this leadership development program is that these young leaders are getting to put the things they’re learning to use in practical, tangible ways each week!
