We’ve started a Sublett family tradition recently. Kim has been baking muffins on Mondays. She’s been doing it for about 4 or 5 weeks now. Last week the muffins were chocolate, and Lilly surprised me by not liking the chocolate muffin. Today was some sort of lemon-poppyseed. When the muffins come out of the oven, Kim parades them through the living room, and the kids get into it. There’s a little celebratory cheer, and they dive in. The muffins don’t last very long.
I think traditions are an important part of family identity and feeling connected to each other. Seth Barnes blogged about being part of a tribe a couple of days ago. The Sublett family is a little tribe. We have an identity, and we belong to each other. I know that it’s a silly little thing, but Muffin Monday is fun, and it’s something that brings us together, reminds us that we are an US. As the kids get older, begin to branch out, and start to move in different directions, we are thankful for things that bring us together.
Do you have family traditions?
