new wine, new wineskins

Jesus said that “no one puts new wine into old wineskins.” (Luke 5:37)  That spoke to me today.

I’ll be honest–I don’t like change.  I like things to stay the same, at least when they’re working well.  I like my routines, my patterns.  I like things to be stable.  Change is upsetting.  It wrecks the routine.  It causes me to readjust, to learn new patterns, to think about what I’m doing.  Maybe that’s not such a bad thing…

I doubt that I fully understand all that Jesus meant, but I think that I know where that hits me today.

If I want different results, I need a different system.  The system I have in place (for whatever the task) is producing the results that it was designed to produce.  Not happy with what you’re getting from your system?  Get a new system.

And that means change.

I guess the big question is this:  am I willing to trade the known (system and  results) for something unknown?  There’s a certain amount of risk involved.

What if there’s a better way of doing _______________ (life, ministry, relationships, etc) just waiting to be discovered?  Am I willing to risk what I have for something else?  What’s the cost?

As much as I like things to stay settled, I think that I have to embrace the change, to take the risk.  I want things to be different/better; that means I need to some new wineskins.

What about you?  Are you satisfied with things the way they are?  Or is there something different/better out there for you?

New wineskins…

And I don’t even like wine…
