My lovely wife is a scrabble nut, and she’s been playing online with our youngest daughter, who is probably not the world’s best speller. They had a game going this morning, and Kim was taking it easy on the little one, enjoying the company and friendly competition. Kim had to run out to pick up [...]

livin’ it

Not to disappoint you, but this isn’t a post about the Stephen Baldwin skater ministry, although that would be cool, too, I suppose.
Yesterday I mentioned my friend, the youth pastor who quit his job. He’s still doing ministry full-time; it just looks a lot different than it did before.
Over the course of my many years [...]

why debate?
March 27th, 2009 · No Comments
I got home from worship team rehearsal tonight in time to catch some of the debate on ABC’s Nightline. Mark Driscoll and Annie Lobert argued for the existence, while Deepak Chopra and Bishop Carlton Pearson argued against. It was interesting, but I’m not sure what the debate accomplished.
If you missed it, you can watch it [...]

what would you do, if you could
March 25th, 2009 · No Comments
A few years back I had a friend who was a youth pastor at a neighboring church. He was part of our youth pastors’ network, and was someone I considered a friend. In the course of conversation one day, I tossed out the question:
Would you attend your church if you weren’t on staff?
As the discussion [...]

thoughts not quite wrapped up
March 25th, 2009 · No Comments
I’ve got something stirring, something brewing in my head. I don’t have all the ends wrapped up, not yet at least. But it has something to do with the Apostle Paul’s words to the church in Corinth, from 1 Corinthians 9.
I am compelled by God to do it. How terrible for me if I didn’t [...]

do you love your job?

love the out-of-the-box thinking, the unnecessary creativity, the sense of play-at-work. I’ll bet these guys didn’t have to be convinced that what they are doing was worthwhile.
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Confucius

my daughter, the hero
March 20th, 2009 · No Comments
Standing at the kitchen window this afternoon, enjoying the warmth of the sun as it set behind the Bryce Jordan Center (go Nittany Lions!) I spotted my youngest daughter, armed with a stick bigger than herself, glaring at one of our cats. You need to know that our cats are prolific hunters. Since the snow [...]

Seth Godin and diminished return on investment
March 19th, 2009 · No Comments
Nick directed me to this video of Seth Godin explaining a little more about his book Tribes. He recently gave the ebook away on his website. You can also find the audiobook here, for free. If you don’t know Seth, you should. I read his blog every day, and generally find some nugget of truth/inspiration [...]

2 years to the day
March 17th, 2009 · No Comments
I had almost forgotten that today is my anniversary. Not the one that I’d get in trouble for forgetting–the anniversary of the day I chopped off part of my left middle finger. Harrowing snow blower accident…total stupid bonehead move on my part. Pictures of the ordeal are in a link in the sidebar, if you [...]

a blast from the past
March 17th, 2009 · No Comments
Today was a tough/good day. My attitude has been in the crapper for a couple of days, in spite of some good things going on. It came to a head today, and I got to the breaking point. Kim and I had a good talk.
A couple of old hymns kept coming to mind today. Funny [...]
